Define the task
Choose a realistic goal rather than asking users to explore freely. For a training site, a task might be finding a course suited to a career changer and understanding the commitment. Use language that does not reveal where to click.
Let the participant lead
Observe the person’s choices and ask neutral follow-up questions. Avoid explaining the interface during the task. Coaching can hide the very difficulties the test is meant to uncover.
Record the important moments
Note where users hesitate, misunderstand information or fail to complete the task. Distinguish an observation from your interpretation. A pause might indicate confusion, careful reading or an interruption.
Look for patterns and retest
Prioritise issues that materially affect task completion or understanding. A small study can identify useful problems without establishing their prevalence. Make a focused change and check whether the difficulty remains.
Observe whether people can complete a task without coaching them through it.
