Recognise transferable experience
Many roles involve understanding needs, analysing problems or coordinating delivery. Identify examples where you influenced a decision or improved a process. Explain their relevance without relabelling your employment history.
Identify the missing practice
Compare your experience with the work a product role requires. You might need more exposure to customer discovery, prioritisation or measuring outcomes. Choose a specific gap rather than collecting training without a clear purpose.
Create a realistic learning opportunity
Volunteer for relevant work where appropriate, or develop a clearly labelled personal case study. Practise defining a problem, comparing options and proposing a test. Seek feedback on your reasoning as well as your presentation.
Tell a credible career story
Explain why product management interests you, what relevant evidence you already have and how you are developing. A grounded account of progress is stronger than claiming expertise in every part of the discipline.
Find relevant experience in your current role and develop the gaps deliberately.
