Review the purpose of each priority
Before carrying a backlog into another planning cycle, ask which customer problem each priority addresses. Identify the evidence behind it and the result you hope to create. Old requests can remain visible long after the circumstances that produced them have changed.
Challenge the implied commitment
Distinguish commitments that must be honoured from ideas still open to evaluation. Explain constraints honestly and make room to question an approach. A plan becomes more credible when it shows the uncertainty the team is managing, rather than presenting every item as equally understood.
Prepare a focused conversation
Bring a small set of priorities, the reasoning behind them and the trade-offs they require. Ask stakeholders to examine outcomes and dependencies rather than add requests without context. Capture the decisions and the assumptions to revisit when new evidence arrives.
