State a testable hypothesis

Describe the change, the audience and the expected effect. “A clearer course summary will help prospective learners understand the commitment” is a starting point. Specify how you will observe understanding.

Choose the right method

Interviews, usability sessions and controlled experiments answer different questions. A small usability test can reveal confusion without proving a population-wide conversion effect. Select a method that fits your uncertainty and available resources.

Watch for competing explanations

Seasonality, campaign changes and differences in traffic can affect results. Record important contextual changes. When comparing groups, consider whether they are similar enough for the comparison to be meaningful.

Decide what happens next

Explain in advance how the result will influence the roadmap. You might ship, refine, stop or investigate further. An inconclusive result is still useful if it reveals a measurement gap or a flawed assumption.

Take this with you

Make the hypothesis, measurement and next decision explicit.
